Documentation for Dollars

Last month’s Hygiene Profits Mastermind Webinar focused on the correct use of insurance codes as well as avoiding the pitfalls of coding errors. This month, with the help of Dr. Roy Shelburne, also with Practice Boosters, we’ll understand the importance of record keeping and accurate documentation.

Join Dr. Shelburne and myself as we learn this no non-sense team approach to record keeping.  It could mean the difference between success and failure in the event of an action or challenge to your practice and can maximize the benefits due your patients.

There are ways to increase legitimate reimbursement, protect and defend a dental practice. You can protect your practice in the event of a Board complaint, insurance audit, malpractice claim, or criminal complaint while leaving no money on the table.

Dr. Shelburne found that his records and systems were faulty. He learned that it is critical and possible to implement protocols and form a defensive systemic approach to record keeping.  Know that if it’s not in your clinical record, you didn’t see it, you didn’t say it, you didn’t do it, it didn’t need to be done, and it doesn’t exist….from the legal perspective. To be prepared for any challenge the whole dental team must be careful, concise, complete, and diligent, not just the doctor.

Learning and implementing this no non-sense team approach to record keeping could mean the difference between success and failure in the event of an action or challenge to your practice and can maximize the benefits due your patients.

Objectives:

  • To understand that what you don’t know and don’t document canhurt you and that ignorance is no excuse
  • To learn to assimilate and maintain records that can maximize legitimate reimbursement, protect and defend.
  • Understand the necessity of due diligence and how to conduct records review and internal audits to insure accuracy and excellence

Dr. Shelburne, an honor graduate from VCU’s Dental school, opened a private general practice in Pennington Gap, Virginia in 1981. In 2008, he surrendered his dental license to practice dentistry after being convicted of healthcare fraud and was sentenced to 24 months in Federal Prison. Now a subject matter expert for the ADA and a nationally known speaker, writer, and consultant, Dr. Shelburne candidly shares his mistakes, his experiences, what he learned as a result, and how to avoid the same life altering experience.
