April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

 

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is now the leading cause of all oropharyngeal cancers according to the Oral Cancer Foundation (https://oralcancerfoundation.org/understanding/hpv/hpv-oral-cancer-facts/). It has never been more critical for dental providers to screen for early detection and share with patients the risks of oral cancer.

In my work coaching dental teams across the country, I find that most dental professionals rarely discuss the risks of HPV with their patients. Becoming comfortable talking about the relationship between oral sex and oral cancer is imperative because 85% of Americans will become infected with HPV in their lifetimes and will therefore be at risk for oropharyngeal cancer (https://www.cdc.gov/hpv/). I know, that sounds ridiculous. So what IS your responsibility to your patients and their overall health? 

Since it’s Heart Health month, let’s start there. It is our responsibility as dental professionals to identify potential risk for heart attack and stroke. Some of those are super obvious. If you’re looking for them.

Who Not How

 

I read a book recently that challenged the way I think about achieving the next level with my goals and my growth, both in my business and my personal life. Who Not How by Dr. Benjamin Hardy and Dan Sullivan, founder of Strategic Coach, pushes us to stop asking ‘how’ but instead to ask ‘who’ is already equipped to help you meet this goal. Maybe you even know the ‘how’ but you know deep down it’s not the best use of your time or resources.

Is your hygiene department falling apart?

 

We’ve heard from a lot of you that things are still feeling very chaotic in your practice and especially when it comes to re-building hygiene teams and systems. Maybe you don’t even want to think about growth until you can stabilize your practice.

What I’d like you to remember is that GROWTH doesn’t always equal more volume-of patients, hours, whatever. More might feel overwhelming right now. I get that.

Growth can also mean refined systems, more efficient hand-offs that are effective and don’t take as much time. Growth can include your mindset. I hope this video will give you some food for thought as you go into the second half of 2021 and what growth might mean for you.
