Periodontal Treatment Improves Restorative Outcomes

Going into an esthetic restorative procedure with gums as healthy as possible has many benefits.  Periodontally healthy patients have little or no gingival bleeding during the prep, making the procedure more efficient.  Impressions are cleaner and more accurate.  And finally, starting with healthy gums, means the patient has less post-operative tissue discomfort.

Providing an elevated level of periodontal care supports outstanding restorative outcomes. But don’t take my word for it, watch this short 3 min video and hear what Dr. Karen Beck of McKinnleyville, California experienced once she and her team implemented Inspired Hygiene’s Profitable Perio System.

Tiny Habits

Contrary to popular belief, making big change happen doesn’t always require big action. Sometimes, it’s a little tweak that makes all the difference. In this week’s Quick Video Tip, I’ll share some ‘tiny habits’ that can make a big difference in hygiene department and create a great experience for your patients.

Desire to Grow + Open to Change= Success for EVERYONE!

It’s easy to get complacent in life, whether it’s personally, spiritually or professionally. Sometimes we go through life and think ‘why challenge myself’? It can be even easier to keep our professional lives at “status quo” when we are meeting our production and collection goals, the patients and team seem happy and life is good. Right? But investing time and money and making the effort to push ourselves to grow professionally will help our team, patients and more importantly OURSELVES succeed! Both in the short term and in the long term. If we don’t learn new skills and acquire new knowledge and experiences, we’re likely to fall behind in our skill sets and personal growth which ultimately can lead to ‘job burnout’!

Watch the video below to see how RDH Shanda Riggins and the DYNAMIC TEAM of Dr. Chad Johnson in Pleasant Hill, Iowa have ‘raised the bar’ in success by simply having the DESIRE TO GROW and being OPEN TO CHANGE!

Be Part of the Change!

Did you know that the survival rate for oral cancer has not significantly improved in decades?  In fact, the death rate associated with oral cancers is higher than that of cervical and testicular cancers, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, laryngeal cancer, and endocrine system cancers such as thyroid or skin cancers like malignant melanoma.

Given these statistics, you won’t want to miss this month’s Mastermind Webinar, “Shining a Light on Intra Oral Cancer” with special guest Rob Whitman.  Join Rob and I as we learn more about cancers of the head and neck.

But most importantly, join us because you want to make a difference in the lives of your patients through early detection and early intervention.  Be Part of the Change!  Screening is the beginning of the end of oral cancer!

I’ll meet you on the webinar!

Shining a Light on Intra Oral Cancer
with special guest
Robert J. Whitman MSE, CEO and Director of Clinical Education, OralID

DrBicuspid.com Editor-in-Chief Tony Edwards presents Robert J. Whitman, CEO and Director of Clinical Education of Forward Science Techonogies, with the 2014 Dental Excellence Award for Best New Preventive Product for the company’s OralID oral cancer screening device.

Screening is the beginning of the end of oral cancer!  Did you know that 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day, dies from oral or pharyngeal cancer and that more than 43,250 new cases will be diagnosed this year?  What can you do to be part of early diagnosis?  This one-hour webinar will outline the types of technology available to help you see beyond the naked eye.  In addition you will discover tips on how to introduce this technology to your patients and incorporate it into daily practice.

On this webinar you will learn:

  • Statistics of oral cancer, morbidity & mortality rates
  • The types of fluorescing technology available
  • How to best introduce this technology to your patients
  • Common risk factors for oral cancer

Mr. Whitman brings a medical engineering mindset to the dental industry. A graduate of Tulane University with both a B.S. and M.S.E. in biomedical engineering, he began his career at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center as a clinical engineer who used fluorescence technology to detect cervical cancer. Shortly thereafter, Whitman joined the research and development department for Remicalm LLC/Trimira LLC and engineered cancer screening products that incorporated the fluorescence technology developed at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Whitman’s extensive clinical engineering experience allowed him to become a manager of technical sales for Trimira, where he focused on training customers how to properly use fluorescence technology in order to detect oral cancer.

Dogs really DO chew biteguards!

I don’t know if this happens to you but just about every time I’ve judged someone’s parenting skills, for example, I’ve been hit right in the face with the exact same situation. You know what I’m talking about. It happens in all areas of life but my awareness of this phenomenon started when my kids were born.

Before I had kids, I was appalled that anyone would bring their kid to church without brushing their hair or that they would bring their kids to the dentist with crackers in their teeth. What awful parents!

Now that the reality of parenting has set in…you guessed it…my kids have shown up looking like well-dressed ragamuffins many a Sunday and I can admit that they don’t brush their teeth EVERY morning.

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve rolled my eyes when a patient told me their dog chewed their occlusal guard. Then without fail, it happened to me.

A few months ago I lost my guard. Always looking for a mystery to solve, my daughter Anna took on the case and wouldn’t you know it, she found it under the dog’s bed.  Here’s a look at the crack team of investigators.

As you would expect, it was completely destroyed.  But here’s the best part…

My Dentist Uses Dental Warranty!

No questions asked, my occlusal guard was replaced!  Yeah, I know…I’m a hygienist so I get some special discounts but just think how your patients would feel when instead of saying ‘That’s a bummer, a new guard will be $497’ you GET to say…

‘That’s a bummer but guess what?  We’ll replace it for FREE’!

And when you use Dental Warranty in your practice, you get to say that about any restorations that you cover with an official, registered warranty. No more awkward, behind-the-patient communication about how much the ‘re-do’ is going to cost.
